Vietnamese Old Version (VIEVOV)

Overview

The Vietnamese Old Version (Kinh Thánh Tiếng Việt 1925) is the foundational Protestant Bible translation in Vietnamese. The translation was principally carried out by Grace Hazenberg Cadman and John Drange Olsen, missionaries with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA), in cooperation with the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS). [1] Grace Cadman began a fresh translation into romanized Vietnamese (Quốc Ngữ) in 1917, working alongside Vietnamese scholar Phan Khoi and student Tran Van Dong of Indochina University. [1] The New Testament was first published by the BFBS in Hanoi in 1923, and the complete Bible was published in 1925-1926 from Shanghai. [1] William C. Cadman, Grace's husband, managed the Bible printing operations in Hanoi. The translation uses traditional Vietnamese vocabulary and remains in wide use among Vietnamese Protestant churches, where it is known as the "Cadman Version" or "Ban Truyen Thong" (Traditional Version). [1]
