Kaninuwa Bible (WATWAT)

Overview

The Kaninuwa Bible, titled Buk Baibel long Kaninuwa, is a collection of Scripture portions in the Kaninuwa language of Papua New Guinea, published in 2016 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] The initial publication contains the books of Mark, Acts, and Jonah, along with portions of Genesis and Exodus. [2] Kaninuwa (also known as Wataluma) is an Oceanic Austronesian language spoken primarily on Goodenough Island in Milne Bay Province. [3] The translation project grew out of a strategic training course held in 2005 that equipped local community members to begin Bible translation work, with a pair of advisers coming alongside the local translators. [2] A second phase launched in early 2021 aimed to translate additional Old Testament and New Testament portions, the JESUS film script, and Bible study materials. [2]
