Wayana 1979 Edition (WAYWTV)

Overview

The Wayana New Testament was published in 1979 by World Team (formerly West Indies Mission), translated by Ivan and Doris Schoen. [1] Ivan Schoen, a carpenter from Florida, felt called to missions after reading about the 1956 martyrdom of Jim Elliot. [1] The Schoens departed for Suriname in 1961 and settled among the Wayana people in the village of Apetina in southern Suriname. [1] Ivan learned the Wayana language, developed a written form, and began translating Scripture, working closely with tribal chief Nuwahe. [1] Bible portions were completed by 1970. [2] A complete Wayana Bible was finished in 2021 and presented to Chief Nuwahe shortly before his death. [1]
