Warlpiri Shorter Bible (WBPWBT)

Overview

The Warlpiri Shorter Bible is a translation containing the complete New Testament along with selected Old Testament books, including Genesis, Ruth, and Jonah, plus passages from Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, and Psalm 23. [1] Translation work was initiated by AuSIL (Australian Society for Indigenous Languages) in the late 1960s, with the first published portion appearing in 1985. [1] The primary translator was Steve Swartz, a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators who, together with his wife Bev, lived and worked among the Warlpiri people at the remote community of Lajamanu in the Northern Territory from 1978 to 1986. [2] The completed Shorter Bible, titled "Yimi-Nyayirni-Wangu Kaatu-Kurlangu," was published by the Bible Society in 2001 and reprinted in 2004. [1]
