Weri New Testament (WERWBT)
Overview
The Weri New Testament, titled Ngonen Pepewer, was published in 1984 by Wycliffe Bible Translators as the first New Testament translation in the Weri language of Papua New Guinea. [1] Weri (ISO 639-3: wer) is a Papuan language spoken in the Finschhafen area of Morobe Province, classified within the Finisterre-Huon branch of the Trans-New Guinea language family. [2] The language was extensively documented by SIL linguists Helen and Maurice Boxwell, who published foundational work on Weri phonology and grammar beginning in the 1960s. [3] The translation has been made available in digital formats including a mobile app and online text through multiple Bible distribution platforms. [1]
