The New Testament in Wik-Mungan (WIMWBT)

Overview

The Wik-Mungkan New Testament, titled "Wik Inangan Kan-Kanam God.antama," was published in 1985 after more than two decades of translation work. [1] Beginning in 1961, Wik-Mungkan speakers Mabel Pamulkan, Jennifer Pootchemunka, and Topsy Wolmby began working with Bible translators Marie Godfrey, Barbara Sayers, and Christine Kilham from the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) at Aurukun, then a Presbyterian Church mission station on Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. [1] [2] The translation was a close collaboration, with indigenous co-translators contributing first drafts, stylistic editing, and detailed final revision, following the translation principles of Beekman and Callow's "Translating the Word of God." [1] The completed text was checked by the Translation Department of SIL's Australian Aborigines Branch. [1] Noel Pearson has described translations of the Bible into Wik-Mungkan and Kuku Yalanji by SIL as "magisterial." [2]
