Kunbarlang Christmas Story and Part of Acts 1 (WLGEBL)

Overview

This publication contains Scripture portions in the Kunbarlang language (ISO 639-3: wlg), specifically selections from Luke (the Christmas story) and Acts chapter 1. Published by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., it represents one of the few Scripture resources in this critically endangered Australian Aboriginal language. Kunbarlang (also known as Gunbarlang) is spoken by approximately 20 or fewer people in the Northern Territory of Australia, with the youngest known speaker in his twenties as of recent assessments. [1] The traditional lands of the Kunbarlang people lie on the coast east of Maningrida in central Arnhem Land, and speakers are found at Gunbalanya (Oenpelli), Maningrida, Minjilang (Crocker Island), and Warruwi (South Goulburn Island). [1] Kunbarlang has been classified within the Gunwinyguan language family, with its closest relatives being the Central Gunwinyguan languages Bininj Kunwok and Dalabon. [1] Most Kunbarlang people now speak Kunwinjku as their primary language. [1] As of 2020, Kunbarlang is one of 20 languages prioritized in Australia's Priority Languages Support Project, aimed at documenting critically endangered languages with living speakers. [1]
