Sw dij Sen (kauq Noangz) — Nong Zhuang New Testament (China)

Overview

Sw dij Sen (kauq Noangz) is the New Testament (41 books) in the Nong Zhuang language of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, published by Peace Publishing Co. in 2023 and available via YouVersion/Bible.com (ID 3632). The community's autonym Kauqnuangz identifies the speakers of Nong Zhuang — one of the two major divisions of the Zhuang language (Nong in the south, Tai or Northern Zhuang in the north). The Zhuang (Cuengh in standard Zhuang orthography) are China's largest officially recognized ethnic minority with approximately 18 million people, primarily in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Nong Zhuang is the southern variety, spoken in areas along the Vietnam border and adjacent zones. The 2023 NT publication makes Nong Zhuang scripture available through a Zhuang Christian publishing house.

Language and People

Nong Zhuang (ISO 639-3: zhn; autonym: Kauqnuangz) is a Kra-Dai language: Kra-Dai → Tai → Southwestern Tai (Kam-Tai) → Zhuang branch. Zhuang languages form a major sub-branch of the Tai family within Kra-Dai. The Zhuang language cluster is internally diverse; Ethnologue recognizes multiple distinct Zhuang varieties with separate ISO codes (Northern Zhuang = zyb, Nong Zhuang = zhn, and others). Nong Zhuang is spoken in the border zones of southern Guangxi (facing Vietnam) and is more closely related to Vietnamese-border Tai varieties than to standard Northern Zhuang.

The Nong Zhuang community inhabits:

  • Southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China — in the mountainous counties along the Vietnam border (Chongzuo, Baise prefectures and adjacent areas)
  • Yunnan Province border areas, also Zhuang-speaking
  • The Nong/Southern Zhuang varieties are concentrated in the southernmost Guangxi counties near the Sino-Vietnamese border

Estimated speakers: the Nong Zhuang variety has approximately 1–3 million speakers within the broader Zhuang ethnic population of ~18 million.

Cultural Context

The Zhuang are China's largest recognized ethnic minority and are the namesake of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (established 1958). The Nong Zhuang specifically represent the southern dialect group whose language shows strong lexical and phonological connections to related Tai languages in northern Vietnam (Tày, Nùng). The Zhuang have a rich cultural heritage including the Liu Sanjie (Third Sister Liu) musical tradition and the Zhuang Zu Santiaolou building style. Christianity among the Zhuang is a minority presence historically introduced through Protestant missions in Guangxi in the 19th–20th centuries; Peace Publishing Co. is a Christian publisher serving Zhuang-language Christian communities. The 41-book count (more than the 27-book NT) suggests the publication includes some Old Testament books alongside the NT.
