Mirgan New Testament — Wycliffe India Version (ZRGWIN)

Overview

The Mirgan New Testament is a Scripture translation in the Mirgan language of India, produced by Wycliffe India (the Indian affiliate of Wycliffe Bible Translators) and made available as the Wycliffe India Version. In 2019, Psalms and Proverbs in Mirgan were released alongside translations in other Indian languages — an early milestone in making written Scripture available to the Mirgan community. [1] An accompanying Jesus Film in Mirgan is also available on Scripture Earth, providing audio-visual Scripture access for this predominantly oral community.

Language and People

Mirgan (ISO 639-3: zrg), also known by the dialect names Batasuna, Jagdal Pur, Kosagumuda, Kotpad, Mirgami, Mirkan, Nabarang Pur, Panika, Panka, and Umerkote, is a stable Indo-European language of India. [2] Mirgan is spoken in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, with speakers concentrated around the Nabarangpur and Koraput districts of southern Odisha and adjacent areas of Chhattisgarh. Speakers are typically semi-literate in Odia (Oriya) and may also understand Desi, the regional lingua franca. Traditional religious practice among the Mirgan includes Animism. The Global Recordings Network has produced audio evangelism materials in the language.

Translation and Publisher

Wycliffe India is a member organization of the Wycliffe Global Alliance working specifically in the Indian context. The Mirgan translation project, listed on Scripture Earth as "Mirgan — Wycliffe India Version," represents Wycliffe India's effort to provide mother-tongue Scripture to a community for whom prior resources existed primarily in Odia. Indian Bible Translators (IBT), a partnering organization, has also been active in producing Psalms and Proverbs portions in Mirgan and related languages as part of its Scripture access programs.
