Leeser Bible, Tanakh (ENGLSB)

Overview

The Leeser Bible is an English translation of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) by Isaac Leeser (1806-1868), first published in 1853. It was the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English produced in the United States and remained the standard English Bible in American synagogues until the Jewish Publication Society's 1917 translation. [1] Leeser, a German-born American rabbi and publisher who served as hazzan of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia, worked on the translation for over 17 years. [1] The translation hews closely to the Hebrew Masoretic Text and reflects traditional Jewish interpretation.
