World English British Edition (ENGWEBB)
Overview
The World English Bible British Edition (WEBBE) is a public domain translation of the full Bible, including deuterocanonical books, into contemporary British/International English. It is a variant of the World English Bible (WEB), an updated revision of the 1901 American Standard Version led by Michael Paul Johnson, who has served as the project's principal editor and translator since work began in 1994. [1] Johnson, who holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado and a Certificate in Bible Translation from the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics, coordinated a collaborative effort of volunteers communicating via the Internet. [1] The main WEB translation was deemed complete in 2020. [1]
The British Edition differs from the standard WEB in two key respects: it uses British/International English spelling conventions, and it renders the divine name as "LORD" or "GOD" (in small capitals) rather than "Yahweh." [2] The translation is mostly formally equivalent, following the approach of its ASV base text, but with modernized vocabulary and grammar. The underlying textual sources include the Greek Majority Text for the New Testament and the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia for the Old Testament, with minor adjustments from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Septuagint. [1] The deuterocanonical section is derived from the Revised Version Apocrypha and the Brenton translation of the Septuagint. [2]
