Mukaddes Kitap Turkmen Bible (TUKIBL)

Overview

The Mukaddes Kitap is the complete Bible in Turkmen, translated by the Institute for Bible Translation (IBT), an organization founded in 1978 to serve non-Slavic language communities of the former Soviet Union. [1] The IBT began publishing Turkmen Scripture portions with the Gospel of John in 1982, followed by a combined New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs volume in 1994. [2] On September 5, 1995, the New Testament was formally presented at a public ceremony in Ashgabat attended by government officials, where a Muslim mullah publicly endorsed the availability of Scripture in Turkmen. [2] After successive revised editions -- including a revised New Testament in 2002, a Roman-script edition in 2005, and the Pentateuch in 2007 -- the IBT completed the full Bible in Roman script in 2016, with a Cyrillic script edition following in 2017. [1][2] The earliest known portion of Scripture in Turkmen was the Gospel of Matthew, translated by American Presbyterian missionary James Bassett and published in 1880 by the British and Foreign Bible Society.
