Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa. The official language is French, which serves as the primary language for government administration, formal education, and nationwide communication. As of 2021, French is spoken by a minority of the population, primarily in urban areas and among the educated population. Niger is linguistically diverse, with over 20 indigenous languages spoken across the country. Some of the major languages include Hausa, spoken by approximately 53% of the population, Zarma-Songhai, spoken by around 21%, and Fulfulde, spoken by about 7%. Many Nigeriens are multilingual, using different languages for various aspects of daily life. Arabic and English are also spoken by a minority of the population as second languages.
