Uab Meto 2000 Edition (AOZLAI)
Overview
The New Testament in Uab Meto (also known as Dawan or Meto), the language of the Atoni people of West Timor, Indonesia. Published in 2000 by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia), this was the first complete Bible translation in Uab Meto. [1][2] The vernacular title is Sulat Knino Beno Alekot.
Bible translation into Uab Meto began in the 1920s with the Dutch Reformed missionary Pieter Middelkoop, who also produced the first linguistic description of the language. In 1950, Middelkoop published Proeve van een Timorese Grammatica, a sketch grammar of the Molo dialect of Uab Meto based on his fieldwork and translation efforts in West Timor. [1][2] The Latin script writing system for Uab Meto was adopted in the early twentieth century, primarily through these missionary efforts to facilitate Bible translation and religious literature. [1] From 1975, ministers of the Gereja Masehi Injili di Timor (GMIT, the Evangelical Christian Church in Timor) became involved in Bible translation work with the Indonesian Bible Society. [3]
