Arop-Lokep (APRWBT)
Overview
The New Testament in the Arop dialect of the Arop-Lokep language of Papua New Guinea, published in 2013 under the vernacular title Rau Ke Maro by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] Arop-Lokep is an Austronesian (Oceanic) language spoken by approximately 3,015 people (2000 census) on islands in the Siassi chain and Long Island in the Vitiaz Strait; the Arop dialect is spoken on Long Island in Madang Province, while the Lokep dialect is spoken on Tolokiwa Island and northern Umboi Island in Morobe Province. [2] The language has been documented in the scholarly literature: Lucille S. D'Jernes contributed the Arop-Lokep chapter to Lynch, Ross, and Crowley's The Oceanic Languages (2002), and Mary Raymond and Steve Parker later described its geminate trills (2005). The translation was led by Jeff and Sissie D'Jernes over more than two decades; after two successive teams of trained co-translators were lost to various hardships, Pastor Joe Ande volunteered his leadership and a third team brought the New Testament to completion. [3] The New Testament was dedicated on June 8, 2014, on Long Island. [3] The printed edition was made available by Masalai Press (Port Moresby) and is distributed digitally through PNG Bible Translation Association and eBible.org; an audio edition is also available through Faith Comes By Hearing.
