Pele-Ata Bible (ATAPNG)

Overview

The New Testament plus Genesis and Jonah in the Ata language of West New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Published in 2009 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea, this translation contains 32 books and serves the Pele-Ata speaking community of approximately 2,000 people on New Britain island. [1] Pele-Ata (also known simply as Ata) is a Papuan language belonging to the Yele-West New Britain language family; the name reflects its two principal dialects, Pele and Ata. [2] The language is classified as stable and is used as a first language by all members of the ethnic community. [3] The translation was carried out under SIL by Kazuo Hashimoto, whose Ata–English dictionary work in Uasilau village ran from 1984 to 1996. The principal Ata language helpers who assisted the translator Hashimoto were Thomas Uenga, Peter Mande, and Gabriel Lupasi.
