Bribri Bible (BZDWBT)

Overview

The Bribri Bible (Tte Pa̱'a̱li̱ Me" Skëköl tö Se' a̱) is the first Scripture translation into the Bribri language, containing the New Testament and Genesis; Wycliffe Bible Translators released the electronic edition in 2010. Bribri is a Chibchan language spoken by approximately 12,800 people along the Lari, Telire, and Uren rivers in the Talamanca mountain and Caribbean coastal regions of Limón and Puntarenas provinces in southern Costa Rica and adjacent areas of Panama. [1] The translation was primarily the work of Paul and Linda Williams, Wycliffe Bible Translators missionaries who were sent to Costa Rica in 1981 and spent 25 years among the Bribri people before completing the New Testament. [4] The translation work navigated significant conceptual challenges; for example, the absence of an equivalent for "Holy Spirit" in Bribri required rendering the term as Sibu Wimbulo, meaning a spirit with its own personality. [2] The translation was done in collaboration with the Bible Society of Costa Rica and three Bribri elders. [2] The first print edition was issued in 2007 by Sociedades Bíblicas Unidas, the Sociedad Bíblica de Costa Rica, and the Comité Traducción al Bribri, when print and audio versions of the New Testament were presented to the people. [4]
