Kaqchikel Sur de Sacatepequez New Testament (CAKSDS)
Overview
The Kaqchikel Sur de Sacatepéquez New Testament (1993) is a first translation of the New Testament into the southern Sacatepéquez dialect of the Kaqchikel language, published by the United Bible Societies. [1] It is one of five regional Kaqchikel New Testaments produced by SIL/Wycliffe between 1980 and 2012 to serve dialect zones in which the Central Kaqchikel edition is not fully understood, and the southern Sacatepéquez variety is now coded separately as Cakchiquel Southern (ckf). Kaqchikel is one of the major Mayan languages of Guatemala, and its dialects exhibit significant regional variation; this translation specifically serves communities in the southern part of the Sacatepéquez department. [2] The history of Kaqchikel Bible translation dates to William Cameron Townsend, founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators, who learned Kaqchikel after arriving in Guatemala in 1917 and published a Kaqchikel New Testament in 1931 — one of the founding efforts that led to the creation of SIL International. [3] This 1993 edition represents a later, dialect-specific translation effort distinct from Townsend's earlier central Kaqchikel work. The translation is titled "Ri Uuzilaj Rutzij Ri Dios Pa Kach'abel." [4]
