English Easy-to-Read (1987) (ENGERV)

Overview

The Holy Bible: Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) is an English translation of the Bible compiled by the World Bible Translation Center (WBTC), now part of Bible League International. It was originally published as the English Version for the Deaf (EVD) by BakerBooks in 1987. The translation was commissioned to serve deaf readers, who often struggle with written English because sign language is their first language; the WBTC produced a version to make reading the Bible easier for them. Ervin Bishop did most of the translating, using a thought-for-thought or functional-equivalence method with simpler vocabulary and shorter sentences. Later relabelled the Easy-to-Read Version, it was also found useful for others who struggle with reading and is often used in literacy programs and prison ministries.
