Leeser Bible, Tanakh (ENGLSB)

Overview

The Leeser Bible is an English translation of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) by Isaac Leeser (1806-1868), a German-born American rabbi and publisher who served as hazzan of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia. [1] Leeser issued a Pentateuch in five volumes in 1845 and completed the full Tanakh in 1853, published as The Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Scriptures; in the bilingual edition the Hebrew text appears on facing pages. He worked on the translation for over 17 years. [1] It was the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English produced in the United States and remained the standard English Bible in American synagogues until the Jewish Publication Society's 1917 translation. [1] The translation hews closely to the Hebrew Masoretic Text and reflects traditional Jewish interpretation.
