Overview

The LXX2012 is an Americanized English edition of Sir Lancelot Charles Lee Brenton's (1807-1862) English translation of the Septuagint. Brenton, a Plymouth Brethren scholar at Oxford, prepared his diglot Greek-English Septuagint for Samuel Bagster & Sons, first issued in London in 1844 and revised in 1851. [1] Based primarily on the Codex Vaticanus, it rendered the Greek into a register modelled on the King James Version and has been one of the most frequently cited standard English renderings of the Septuagint for over 150 years. [2] The LXX2012 edition was prepared by Michael Paul Johnson, who updated Brenton's British English spelling and word usage to contemporary American English while retaining Brenton's word order and punctuation; Johnson's editorial updates are dedicated to the public domain. [1] The edition includes the Old Testament and Apocrypha/Deuterocanon. Hebrew name transliterations in Brenton's work often differ from those in conventional English Bibles, which typically follow Greek-based renderings. [1]
