World English Bible (2000) (ENGWEB)
Overview
The World English Bible (WEB) is an English translation of the Bible published in 2000. The project began in 1997 under Rainbow Missions, Inc., a Colorado nonprofit corporation, with the aim of producing a complete translation of the Holy Bible in normal modern English that could be freely posted on the internet and freely copied without written permission from the publisher or payment of royalties. No other Bible was thus available, and this is the vacuum that the World English Bible is filling. Editor Michael Paul Johnson coordinated scores of volunteer translators, editors, and proofreaders, who updated the archaic forms of the American Standard Version of 1901 against the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia and the Majority Text Greek New Testament. The American Standard Version is in the public domain, and the WEB revision — released in stages from 2000 onward and dedicated to the public domain — is also in the public domain, which sets it apart from other revisions of the American Standard Version, like the New American Standard Bible and the Revised Standard Version, and has made it the most-distributed copyright-free modern English Bible online. There is also the World English Bible: Messianic Edition that substitutes traditional Hebrew names and phrases for the equivalent Greek/English names and phrases. The World English Bible is in the public domain.
