Enga Bible portions (ENQPN2)
Overview
This publication contains Matthew, Mark, and part of Genesis in the Enga language, representing a revised translation of Scripture for the largest single-speaking language group in Papua New Guinea, with approximately 300,000 speakers [1]. The Enga translation effort has a long history: Lutheran, Catholic, and Seventh Day Adventist missionaries first arrived among the Enga people in 1947-1948, and the Lutheran mission published a small collection of Bible stories in the Mai dialect in 1955 [2]. A complete Enga New Testament using a mixture of the Mai and Laeyapo dialects was published in 1988 by the Lutheran and Catholic missions [2]. In 2012, pastors and priests from various denominations met at the Christian Life Center Church in Wabag and decided to revise the 1988 New Testament into the Central (Kaina) dialect, which is understood by all Enga speakers [2]. Rev. Maniosa Yakasa of the Gutnius Lutheran Church served as lead translator, with Rev. Adam Boyd providing technical expertise as advisor beginning in 2012, and a nine-member team was trained at the Wycliffe Bible Translators PNG headquarters in Ukarumpa in 2013 [3]. Seven denominations participated in the collaborative translation effort, including Lutheran, Catholic, Apostolic, ALC, Foursquare, Christian Life Center, and Assemblies of God churches [2].
