French Crampon Bible (1923) (FRABAC)

Overview

The Crampon Bible (La Bible Augustin Crampon) is a French Catholic translation of the complete Bible by Augustin Crampon (1826-1894), a canon of Amiens cathedral and professor at the Catholic University of Amiens. [1] Working from the original Hebrew and Greek texts rather than the Latin Vulgate, Crampon began the translation in the 1880s but died before completing the work. His translation of the New Testament was published posthumously in 1894, and the complete Bible was issued in seven volumes between 1894 and 1904, completed by colleagues including Père Albert Brassac. [1] The single-volume revised edition of 1923, prepared by Jesuit and Sulpician scholars after Crampon's death, became the standard French Catholic Bible before being superseded by the Jerusalem Bible in 1956.
