Ethiopic Gamo New Testament (GMVTBL)

Overview

The Ethiopic Gamo New Testament is a 2011 translation of the New Testament into the Gamo language, rendered in the Ethiopic (Ge'ez) script. [1] Gamo is an Omotic language of the Afroasiatic family spoken by approximately 1.6 million people in the Gamo Highlands of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) of southwestern Ethiopia. [2] The translation was produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] The Gamo people are historically associated with the Gamo kingdom, one of several Ometo-speaking polities in southern Ethiopia. Gamo is closely related to neighboring languages such as Gofa and Dawro, all belonging to the Ometo branch of the Omotic family. SIL Ethiopia, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023, has been a key partner in Bible translation efforts across the region. [3]
