Gwere 2017 Edition (GWRWBT)

Overview

The Gwere 2017 Edition, titled ENdagaano eMpyaka omu Lugwere in the vernacular, is a Bible translation in the Lugwere language spoken by the Bagwere people of eastern Uganda. Early attempts to write the Lugwere language and translate the Bible were made in the 1970s, but it was not until 1999 that SIL International sent a missionary family to the Bugwere region to assist with language development [1]. A standardized orthography was collaboratively developed in the early 2000s, and Bible translation work began in earnest in 2005 [1]. A Lugwere-English dictionary was published in both print and online formats in 2012 [1]. The New Testament was officially launched on July 29, 2017, at the Budaka Ssaza grounds in eastern Uganda, with President Yoweri Museveni attending the dedication ceremony and pledging financial support for the ongoing Old Testament translation [2][3]. The Lugwere Bible Translation and Language Development Organisation now leads the Old Testament translation effort, with SIL providing consultant services [1].
