Hanunoo 1995 Edition (HNNOMF)
Overview
The Hanunoo New Testament was published in 1995 by Overseas Missionary Fellowship, with Scripture portions available from 1981. [1] The Hanunoo are the largest of the eight Mangyan tribes on Mindoro. [2] This was one of three Mangyan New Testament translations in which OMF had a major role, alongside the Buhid (1988) and Iraya (1991) editions. [2] The specific OMF missionaries who led the Hanunoo NT translation to its 1995 completion have not been identified in available sources. A complete Hanunoo Bible was later published in 2023 through collaboration between OMF, SIL International, and Wycliffe. [2][3]
Translation History
Old Testament translation work followed the 1995 New Testament. Ten OT books had been drafted in the late 1980s but required complete redrafting; over a subsequent four-year period, five people drafted twenty-eight OT books. [4] Biannual translation workshops were held in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, bringing together indigenous Hanunoo translators and professional linguists from OMF, SIL, and Wycliffe. [4] The complete Bible was dedicated on July 6, 2024 at Lamac Village, Oriental Mindoro, where mother-tongue translators including "Beth" and "Maligday" were honored. [3]
