Overview

The Kakwa 1977 Edition is a New Testament translation in the Kakwa language, published by the United Bible Societies. The Kakwa people span the border regions of northwestern Uganda, southwestern South Sudan, and northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, sometimes referring to themselves as "Kakwa Salia Musala" ("Kakwa of three countries") to express their unity despite political dispersion across three nations. [1][2] This 1977 translation provided Scripture access to a transnational language community whose primary religious affiliation is Christianity, predominantly Roman Catholic. [1]

Language and People

Kakwa (ISO 639-3: keo), also known as Kutuk na Kakwa, is an Eastern Nilotic language spoken by approximately 351,000 people across three countries. [1][3] The major Kakwa population centers include Yei and Morobo County in South Sudan, Koboko and Yumbe districts in Uganda, and Imgbokolo and Aba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. [2] The Kakwa are a Nilotic ethnic group and part of the larger Karo peoples. [2] They are linguistically related to groups such as the Bari, Pojulu, Mundari, Kuku, and Nyangwara.
