Overview

The Gospel of Luke in Karon, titled "Hilim ha hiti Putuun pa," is a Scripture portion in the Karon language (also known as Jola-Karon, Karone, Kaloon, or Kulonay), a Jola language of the Bak branch of Atlantic–Congo, spoken by approximately 14,000 people in Senegal and an estimated 95,000 across West Africa including the Gambia [1][2]. An earlier count cited around 15,000 speakers in 2007. The Karon people are an isolated community living on several islands along the Casamance River near its mouth on the southwest Senegal coast, straddling the border between southwestern Senegal and the Gambia, accessible primarily by boat [1]. SIL Senegal has provided technical expertise in translation theory and practice for the Karon translation project, with speakers from both Senegal and the Gambia working together on the translation team [3]. One notable challenge in the translation work has been the bilingual context, as the official language of Senegal is French while that of the Gambia is English [3]. The translation was published in 2018 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, and additional Scripture portions, including Genesis, have been produced in Karon [4].
