Overview

The Karang New Testament is a Scripture translation in the Karang language, an Adamawa language of the Mbum branch spoken in the Mayo Rey Division of Cameroon's North Region and in the Logone Oriental region of Chad [1][2]. The Karang people, numbering approximately 27,000 in Cameroon, historically lived as hunter-gatherers practicing animism before the establishment of an Islamic kingship in the region [2]. SIL translator Bob Ulfers worked with the Karang community for more than 25 years, and the translation team paid careful attention to cultural context; for example, in the account of the leper approaching Jesus, the phrase "if you are willing" was rendered as "if it is within your heart" because the literal phrasing would have been perceived as insulting in Karang culture [3]. The translation was published by Wycliffe Bible Translators, with the copyright held by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [4]. The Karang people are classified as minimally reached, with approximately 40% identifying as Christian [2].
