Larrakia Christmas Story (LRG)

Overview

The Larrakia Christmas Story is the first-ever Scripture published in the Gulumoerrgin (Larrakia) language, an extremely endangered language spoken near Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, with only about 14 people claiming knowledge of it as of 2016. [1] It was published as a children's book called "Bibi Jesus" (2023) by AuSIL (Australian Society for Indigenous Languages). Translator Lorraine Williams learned to read and write Larrakia through discussions with elders and listening to recordings from Global Recordings Network. [1] The book contains the Christmas story (Luke 2:6-12) in both Gulumoerrgin and English, with illustrations Williams created from paperbark, a traditional material.
