The speakers' self-identification Iyaka connects this community to the broader Yaka (Eyaka) cultural identity of the southwestern Congo basin, where the Yaka Bantu peoples occupy the Kwango and Kwilu river regions. The Belgian Congo period (1885–1960) brought Catholic and Protestant missions into the Kwango area; today the region has significant Christian communities.
