Managalasi New Testament (MCQSPP)
Overview
The New Testament in the Ese Language, also known as the Managalasi Language, of Papua New Guinea. The translation was carried out by Jim and Jaki Parlier, who served with Wycliffe Bible Translators beginning in 1962, living among the Managalasi people in Oro Province for approximately twenty years [1][2]. Jim Parlier developed a written alphabet for the language and undertook the translation work, while Jaki Parlier created literacy primers and taught Managalasi people to read in preparation for the completed Scriptures [1]. Bible portions were first produced between 1966 and 1968, and the New Testament was completed in 1975, with a revision copyrighted in 1999 [3][4]. The Ese language, which SIL notes may also be called Managalasi (a name some speakers consider pejorative), is a Trans-New Guinea language spoken in the Popondetta district of Oro Province, with dialects including Muaturaina, Chimona, Dea, Akabafa, and others [5][6]. The Managalasi population is estimated at approximately 20,000, with perhaps 40% of speakers being monolingual [3][6].
