Matal 1989 Edition (MFHWYI)

Overview

The Matal 1989 Edition is a New Testament translation in the Matal language (ISO 639-3: mfh), published in 1989 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1]. Matal, also known as Muktele or Balda, is an Afro-Asiatic language of the Biu-Mandara branch spoken by approximately 60,000 people in the Far North Region of Cameroon [2][3]. The Matal people inhabit the western edge of the Mandara Mountains, centered in the arrondissement of Mora in the Mayo-Sava department, with most clans tracing their origins to Majewi near Mokolo in Mafa territory [4]. Linguistic research on Matal was conducted by Kammler in 1971, and SIL International has classified it as a Biu-Mandara A.5 language that is distinct from other Mafa dialects [4][3]. The vernacular title of the New Testament is Wakità Zəzagəla Wakità Aŋa Makəs Vok Slawda Mawga [1].
