Eastern Mari Institute for Bible Translation (MHRIBT)

Overview

The Eastern Mari (Meadow Mari) New Testament was translated and published by the Institute for Bible Translation (IBT), founded in Stockholm in 1973 and now headquartered in Moscow. Meadow Mari, the larger of the two literary Mari standards, is a Uralic language spoken by approximately half a million people, primarily in the Mari El Republic and neighboring regions of the Russian Federation, and is written in Cyrillic. [1] The IBT Helsinki office, which opened in 1983, coordinates translation projects in twelve Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia, including Meadow Mari. [2] This IBT Eastern Mari edition was completed in 1986. A revised edition of the New Testament together with Psalms was published in 2008. [3] The translation has faced adoption challenges, as many Mari speakers have become accustomed to using Russian in their church life. [3]
