Eastern Mari Institute for Bible Translation (MHRIBT)

Overview

The Eastern Mari (Meadow Mari) New Testament was translated and published by the Institute for Bible Translation. Meadow Mari is a Uralic language spoken by approximately half a million people, primarily in the Mari El Republic and neighboring regions of the Russian Federation. [1] The IBT Helsinki office, which opened in 1983, coordinates translation projects in twelve Finno-Ugric languages spoken in Russia, including Meadow Mari. [2] A revised edition of the New Testament together with Psalms was published in 2008. [3] The translation has faced adoption challenges, as many Mari speakers have become accustomed to using Russian in their church life. [3]
