Mape New Testament (MLHPNG)

Overview

The New Testament in the Mape language of Papua New Guinea, published in 2008 as the first Scripture translation in this language. Mape (also known as Mangap) is an Eastern Huon language of the Finisterre-Huon branch of Trans-New Guinea, spoken on the Huon Peninsula in Morobe Province. [1] Documented dialects include Mape, Fukac, Naga, and Nigac, and the 2000 census recorded roughly 1,700 speakers. The translation was carried out in partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators and published by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea. The Mape title, Maŋkekerisiere Biŋe Quraŋ Jojofo Gariine, reflects the language's distinctive phonology. With approximately 5,100 speakers, most of whom are multilingual in Tok Pisin, this first translation represents an important step in making Scripture accessible to the Mape-speaking community in their heart language.
