Chimpoto (MPAEBL)
Overview
Chimpoto is a New Testament translation in the Mpoto language (ISO 639-3: mpa), published by The Word for the World International with a copyright date of 2020. [1] "Chimpoto" is the autonym used by speakers for their own language. [2] The Mpoto people, numbering approximately 104,000, live in the Mbinga district of the Ruvuma region in southwestern Tanzania, near the northeastern shore of Lake Nyasa. [2] Bible portions in Mpoto were first produced as early as 1913, with the New Testament completed between 2020 and 2024. [2]
Language and People
Mpoto is a Bantu language closely related to Matengo, spoken in southwestern Tanzania. [2] The Mpoto people are predominantly Christian (approximately 70%, largely Roman Catholic), with about 25% practising ethnic religions and 5% Muslim. [2] The language has a written form using the Latin script. [2]
