Marba 1999 Edition (MPGABT)

Overview

The Marba 1999 Edition is a New Testament translation in the Marba language, published by the Alliance Biblique du Tchad (Bible Society of Chad) in N'Djamena. Marba is a Masa-group language of the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family, spoken in southwestern Chad in the Tandjilé and Mayo-Kebbi Est regions. [1] Bible translation work in Marba has a long history: the first Scripture portions (Mark and Ephesians) were published by the American Bible Society in 1967 following the finalization of a Marba orthography in the mid-1960s. [1] The first complete New Testament was published in 1978 by the United Bible Societies with support from the Assemblées Chrétiennes au Tchad and the Roman Catholic Church. [1] A complete Bible (Old and New Testaments) was prepared by the Alliance Biblique du Cameroun in 1994 and published by the Alliance Biblique du Tchad in 1999, carrying the French subtitle La Sainte Bible en langue Azumeina, which reflects the older name Azumeina for the language now generally called Marba. [1] The Marba writing system uses the Latin alphabet with tonal diacritics: acute accents for high tones and grave accents for low tones. [2]
