Overview

The Alkitab Duri is a New Testament translation in the Duri language of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, published by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1]. The Duri New Testament was first completed in 2005, with Bible portions having been available since 1998, and Old Testament books have continued to be translated in subsequent years, including Jonah (2009), Esther (2010), Daniel (2012), Ruth (2016), Joshua and Amos (2019), and Proverbs (2020) [2]. Linguistic groundwork for the translation was laid by SIL researchers Kari and Susanne Valkama, who conducted field research on the Duri language from 1987 to 1992 under a cooperative program between Hasanuddin University in Ujung Pandang and the Summer Institute of Linguistics [3][4]. Kari Valkama published foundational studies on Duri grammar (1993) and a Duri dictionary (2020) through SIL International [3][5]. Duri is the prestige language among the four Massenrempulu languages (Duri, Enrekang, Maiwa, and Malimpung) and is spoken by approximately 130,000 people in the Enrekang regency of South Sulawesi province, a mountainous area between the Toraja and Bugis regions [6][7]. The Duri are predominantly Muslim, with a small Christian minority found in villages near the Toraja border [2][7].
