1835 Judson Burmese Bible (MYABJB)

Overview

The Judson Burmese Bible is the first complete translation of the Bible from the original languages into Burmese, produced by Adoniram Judson (1788–1850), an American Baptist missionary and one of the most significant figures in Bible translation history. [1] Judson arrived in Rangoon in 1813 knowing no Burmese. He completed the New Testament in 1823 and was then imprisoned for 20 months during the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824–1826); his wife Ann Hasseltine Judson preserved the manuscript during his captivity. [1] Judson completed the full Bible on January 31, 1834, after 24 years of work, and it was published in 1835 by the American Baptist Mission Press in Maulmain (Moulmein). [2] Revised editions followed in 1837 and 1840. The Judson Bible remains in use today as the standard Burmese Protestant Bible. [1]
