Oluhanda Audio Bible Portions (NYKWSA)

Overview

This resource contains audio Bible portions in Oluhanda (Handa), a dialect of Nyaneka spoken in the Huila Province of Angola, produced by Wycliffe Bible Translators and distributed through the Faith Comes By Hearing platform [1]. Oluhanda is part of the Nyaneka-Humbe cluster, a group of closely related Bantu languages spoken across the Huíla, Namibe, and Cunene provinces of southwestern Angola; the broader Nyaneka language (nyk) is spoken by approximately 1.27 million people [2]. Wycliffe South Africa (Wycliffe South Africa / Wycliffe Bible Translators) is leading an oral Bible translation project for Oluhanda as part of the Huila Cluster, which includes the related languages OluCilenge and !Xun; Phase 1 of the project produced 18 oral Scripture stories and 3 songs in OluHanda [3]. Bible translation in Angola has historically been challenging due to decades of civil war (1975–2002), which displaced communities and disrupted literacy programs, but Wycliffe and the Bible Society in Angola (Sociedade Bíblica de Angola) have accelerated work across Angolan languages since the peace agreement [4]. The audio portions extend Scripture access to the OluHanda community for whom oral media is the most natural format of engagement [1].
