Mochi 1998 Edition (OLDBST)

Overview

The Mochi 1998 Edition, titled Agano Jipya kwa Kimochi, is a New Testament translation in Kimochi, a Bantu language of the Chagga cluster and one of the dialects of the Central Kilimanjaro (Chaga) grouping, published by the Bible Society of Tanzania with a 1998 copyright. Kimochi is spoken in the Old Moshi area on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and is considered the prestige dialect among the Chagga people. [1] The first New Testament in any Chagga dialect was a Kimochi translation completed in 1939, making it a pioneering Scripture publication for the broader Chagga community. [2] By the late twentieth century, however, that edition had become outdated and gone out of print, prompting a fresh translation effort begun in 1993, for which the Northern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania provided translators and reviewers. The revised New Testament was completed and officially launched in November 2000 by the Bible Society of Tanzania, with work continuing toward a full Bible. [2]
