Sampang 2008 Edition (RAVNLP)

Overview

The Sampang 2008 Edition is a New Testament translation into Sampang, a Sino-Tibetan (Kiranti) language spoken by the Sampang Rai people of the Khotang and Bhojpur districts of eastern Nepal. Published in 2008, this translation provides the 27 books of the New Testament to a small community of approximately 18,300 speakers. [1] The Sampang are a subgroup of the Rai people, who belong to the Central Kiranti ethnic cluster and are part of the indigenous Kirat peoples of the Himalayan mid-hills. [2] Historically, the Sampang trace their roots to ancient Kiranti tribes known for warrior traditions and a deep connection to the land. [2] The predominant religions among the Sampang are Buddhism (approximately 43%) and Hinduism (approximately 18%), with Christianity having made very limited inroads into the community. [3]
