Shan Bible (and Portions) (SHNTBS)
Overview
This is a 2002 joint publication of the Shan New Testament by the Thailand Bible Society (Bangkok) and the Myanmar Bible Society (Yangon), containing corrections to a 1994 edition. [1] The Shan language has a long history of Scripture translation. The first Shan New Testament was completed in 1882 by Rev. Josiah Nelson Cushing (1840--1905), an American Baptist missionary who had arrived in Burma in 1866 and also produced the first Shan grammar (1871) and the first Shan-English dictionary (1881). [2] Cushing collaborated with native speakers including Shwe Wa from Kengtung and completed the Old Testament in 1891, with the full Shan Bible published in 1892. [1] A centenary celebration of the Shan New Testament was held in NamKham in December 1985. [1] In 1985, the United Bible Societies initiated a modern translation project led by Dr. David J. Clark and translator Aung Htun Shwe, which produced the 1994 New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs; the 2002 edition corrected that work. [1] A separate effort beginning in 1996 revised Cushing's original translation into contemporary Shan orthography, culminating in the publication of a complete revised Cushing Bible in 2023. [1]
