Saniyo-Hiyewe New Testament (SNYWBT)
Overview
The Saniyo-Hiyewe New Testament was published in 2004 by Wycliffe Bible Translators as the first Scripture in this language. [1] Saniyo-Hiyewe is the westernmost language of the Sepik Hill language family, spoken by approximately 1,300 people along the Wogamous River south of the Sepik River in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, with some speakers also in Sandaun Province. [2] Linguistic groundwork for the translation was laid by SIL linguists Ronald K. Lewis and Sandra C. Lewis, who produced grammar and phonological studies of the language beginning in 1972. [3] The Saniyo people live about 100 miles upriver from the government station of Ambunti. [2]
