The Bible in Datooga (TCCBST)
Overview
The Bible in Datooga (copyright Bible Society of Tanzania, 2015) contains the New Testament in the Datooga language, first published in 2002 with a revised edition following in 2015. The Datooga (also called Tatoga) are semi-nomadic pastoralists of the Rift Valley area of central-northern Tanzania, living primarily in the Mbulu and Hanang districts of Manyara Region. [1] The Datooga did not have a written language until 1985, when missionaries from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania began developing a Datooga phonology. [2] Translation of the New Testament began in 1998 under the Bible Society of Tanzania (BST), with the Gospel of Mark completed and published in 2004 and the full New Testament following. [2] The translation project involved harmonizing multiple Datooga dialects, as the approximately twelve subgroups each speak somewhat different varieties. [2] Old Testament translation work has continued under BST with consultants from the United Bible Societies. [2]
