Tugen is a Nilotic language of the Kalenjin family spoken by approximately 140,000 people in Baringo County in Kenya's Rift Valley, subdivided into four dialects: Arror, Samor, Lembus, and Endorois. While the broader Kalenjin Bible serves some Tugen dialect speakers, a 2010 survey by Bible Translation & Literacy (BTL) found that the Samor and Arror dialects are sufficiently distinct that their speakers cannot comfortably use the Kalenjin Bible. BTL, established in 1981 and Kenya's primary indigenous Bible translation organization, launched a dedicated Tugen translation programme in the 2011–2015 strategic period to address this gap. BTL's methodology integrates language development and literacy training alongside translation work, and the organization has received UNESCO recognition for its contributions to literacy in Kenya. The resulting audio New Testament is's Bible.is platform, bringing scripture to Tugen-speaking communities in Baringo County in their heart language.
