Umbu-Ungu Kala New Testament (UBUKAL)

Overview

The Umbu-Ungu Kala New Testament contains the New Testament in the Kala dialect of the Umbu-Ungu language, published in 1995 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea [1]. Umbu-Ungu (also known as Kakoli or Kaugel) is a Trans-New Guinea language spoken by approximately 70,000 people in the Western Highlands and Southern Highlands Provinces of Papua New Guinea [2]. The Kala sub-dialect is spoken in and near Palinoli village in the Tambul and Lower Kaugel Districts of the Western Highlands Province [3]. SIL linguist June Head, who was resident in Palinoli village from early 1970 to mid-1976, conducted grammatical analysis and contributed to the language development work that supported the translation project [3]. A separate New Testament translation was produced simultaneously for the No Penge dialect (see UBUNPG), reflecting the linguistic diversity within the Umbu-Ungu language community [2]. The vernacular title is "Pulu Yemonga Ungu Kondemo: Kala."
