Bible in Uyghur Latin (UIGLAT)
Overview
The Mukeddes Kalam ("Holy Scripture") in Uyghur Latin script is a full Bible translation completed in 2010 by the Uyghur Bible Translation Committee. [1] This Latin script edition uses the Uyghur Latin Yeziq (ULY) orthography, which was formerly used for Uyghur writing and remains familiar to some Uyghur communities, including much of the global Uyghur diaspora. It is one of four script editions of the same translation, published simultaneously in Arabic, Cyrillic, Latin, and Pinyin scripts to serve different Uyghur-speaking communities. [1] The translation closely follows the original Hebrew and Greek source texts and draws on the earlier Kashgar Uyghur translation (1910-1950) by Mehmet Xukri and the Swedish Missionary Society. [1][2]
Uyghur Bible translation began with Johannes Avetaranian of the Swedish Missionary Society, whose Gospel of Matthew was published in 1898 and revised New Testament in 1914. Gustaf Ahlbert and colleagues later completed the first full Uyghur Bible, published by the British and Foreign Bible Society in Cairo in 1950, after the Swedish missionaries had been expelled from Xinjiang.
