The New Testament in Urat (URTWBT)

Overview

The New Testament in Urat was published in 2016 by Wycliffe Bible Translators through the SIL Papua New Guinea branch, with earlier Scripture portions having been available since 1993 [1]. Urat (also known as Wasep or Wusyep) is a Torricelli language of the Palei branch, spoken in the Dreikikir district of East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, southwest of Wom and south of Kombio [2]. The language has four regional dialects: North Urat (Wasep Ngau), Central Urat (Wusyep Yihre), South Urat (Wasep Yam), and East Urat (Wusyep Tep), with a total speaker population of approximately 12,000 [2]. Unusually for a Papuan language, Urat features four voiceless liquids and semivowels in its phonological inventory [3]. The vernacular title "Wusyep Bwore tikin Got" identifies the translation as God's Word in the Wusyep language.
